About Juniper Works

Aaron and Gavin, one house built in the 1980s, and a remodel documented from the very first board we pulled off.

Who we are

We're Aaron and Gavin. We're doing this work ourselves, on the house we live in, and filming all of it. Gavin edits the long-form videos, and we both swing hammers.

We're not here to tell you how to do your house. We're showing you how we did ours: the reasoning, the plans, the mistakes we made and how we fixed them.

The house

It's a normal 1980s house: stone and lap siding outside, a metal roof, and an attic that had been quietly cooking for forty years. Like most homes from that era it was under-insulated, the ductwork was tired, and some of the framing had cracked or sagged.

Why we started with the attic

The attic is where most of a house's comfort problems start. Ours hit triple digits every summer, the old flex duct was falling apart, and critters had made themselves at home. So we started at the top: we had plans drawn, brought in a structural engineer, and began tearing the old attic off to rebuild it properly.

That means new framing, new ductwork, a new roof and insulation that actually works. It also means everything we learned along the way, including the parts nobody puts in the highlight reel.

Why "Juniper"?

The emblem is a cedar waxwing on a juniper branch. Waxwings live on juniper berries, and like them, we're making something out of what was already there.
